Guide to the Best Flea Markets in Rome, Thrift Stores, and Vintage Clothing Shops

If wandering around flea markets energizes you and you also believe it’s a unique way to fill your closet and home with rare and beautiful things, then we have something in common. In this article, I will reveal where to find the best flea markets in Rome, the city where I was born and raised. Vintage shopping in Rome is not limited to the Porta Portese and Via Sannio markets, which are the best known and a sort of tourist attraction in themselves. There are a number of markets in the city that specialize in vintage items but you’ll also find plenty of vintage clothing shops.
In the post, I’ll also talk about the best secret thrift stores in Rome where you’ll find second-hand clothes, accessories, furniture, housewares, and other items.

WHERE DO YOU GET THE BEST DEALS?

As with other cities, it is true for Rome that flea markets and vintage stores near the historic center will have higher prices. To find real bargains and especially do shopping in peace, without having to make your way through the crowds, it is ideal to go to markets and stores in the neighborhoods on the outskirts of the historic center.

SUNDAY FLEA MARKETS IN ROME

Here are the flea markets in Rome that come alive on Sunday.

BORGHETTO FLAMINIO

Sunday 10 am – 7 pm
Address: Piazza della Marina, 32
About 10 minutes walk from the charming Piazza del Popolo, with its churches and fountains, in 1994 was founded an indoor flea market in the style of the American garage sale. Here you will find many amateur exhibitors who help friends give new life to clothes and objects that are no longer needed. Entrance to the market is €2.

PONTE MILVIO ANTIQUES MARKET

Sunday 9 am- 7 pm

Address: Via Capoprati
Here is a flea market famous throughout central Italy. Every Sunday fans of antiques, collectors, vintage and handicrafts flock here from the neighboring regions. Here you can find everything and the location is very pleasant because the market takes place on the Tiber river promenade.

PORTA PORTESE FLEA MARKET ROME

Sunday, 6 am – 2 pm

Address: Piazza di Porta Portese
Porta Portese is one of the most popular flea markets in Italy, certainly the largest and most famous in Rome. Here you’ll find hundreds of stalls selling everything from vintage clothes to used bicycles to car seats. The market is very crowded, so come early in the morning if you don’t like to be in the middle of the crowd. If you prefer to browse the stalls with clothing and household items, enter through the Piazzale Portuense entrance. To look for antiques, enter through Piazza Ippolito Nievo.

MERCATO MONTI

Saturday and Sunday from 10 am – 8 pm

Address: Via Leonina, 48

Mercato Monti is held indoors in one of Rome’s prettiest neighborhoods, Rione Monti, a stone’s throw from the Colosseum. This market was recently founded and even the exhibitors are young: artisans and designers who sell vintage clothes, accessories, and jewelry created by them. Here you’ll find items that cost a little more than in other second-hand markets.

VINTAGE MARKET ROME

Saturday and Sunday, itinerant.
In 2008, two friends returning from a long trip to Europe, have an idea to found a flea market in Rome different from the others.
The “Vintage Market Roma” is held in various neighborhoods and locations in Rome and brings together different art forms and initiatives in order to involve the whole family. This market aims to promote local and emerging artists and artisans. Alongside clothes, vinyl, and used books there are artist booths such as designers and illustrators, organic food from local producers, activities for children, and more.
To find out where it’s held each week, check out their website’s events page.

PORTA PORTESE – MONTE MARIO – NORTH OF ROME

Sunday 7 am – 1 pm

Address: Via Sebastiano Vinci

When it comes to vintage clothing in Rome, I’ve always found some unique pieces at bargain prices at the markets held once a week, on a set day, in every neighborhood in Rome.
The market of the Monte Mario neighborhood is located in the northwest suburbs of Rome. Here you will find clothing stalls at €2, €3, €4, €5 and €10, along with stalls selling vegetables, delicatessen, housewares, and non-vintage clothing. Usually, this local market is not very crowded.
After shopping, I recommend satisfying your taste buds at one of these two places:
the Pane e Salame bakery in via di Torrevecchia 65, for street food such as pizza by the slice and supplì.
the Cucineria Trattoria Centonovanta for lunch with typical Roman and Italian dishes and a tiramisu made to perfection.

MERCATINO CAPANNELLE

Sunday 9 am – 6 pm

Address: Via Appia Nuova 1240

Born in 2011, in a few years has become one of the best flea markets in Rome. The market is huge and has ample free parking. Exhibitors have 5 pavilions and 4000 square meters of outdoor space. Here you will find clothing, models, antiques, toys, books, modern art, gifts, crafts, local products … and every third Sunday of the month there is an exhibition of vintage cars and motorcycles.

MERCATINO VILLAGGIO OLIMPICO

Here you will find all the vintage clothing and accessories you are looking for, especially shoes and bags, even designer items. The market is indoor and very popular.

MERCATO DELLE STAMPE – VINTAGE PRINTS MARKET

Every day from 10 to 19. Closed in August.

In the heart of the historic center, the square where the Borghese family palaces and the Faculty of Architecture are located is animated by the “Prints Market”. About 16 kiosks display vintage photographs and cameras, antique and modern drawings and watercolors, important manuscripts and autographs, antique prints, vintage postcards, antique books, sculptures, vintage jewelry, and rare items.

THRIFT STORES IN ROME

If you’re ready to explore Rome off the beaten path to satisfy your thirst for vintage shopping and flea markets, I’ll let you in on a secret that only the locals know. Italians are so passionate about second-hand clothing and items that in 1995 a brand of flea markets was born where locals drop off their stuff and buy more.
The “Mercatino” currently has 29 thrift stores in Rome, occupying old garages or warehouses.
Here you can find in addition to clothing and accessories, furniture, appliances, music and household items.
Although the name is translated as “little market”, this is for all intents and purposes an indoor second-hand store with only one checkout, no stalls. You can get great bargains and you can really find anything.
Check out the map for all the locations of “Il Mercatino”:

VINTAGE CLOTHING SHOPS IN ROME

The Monti district, in addition to hosting the Sunday clothing and accessories market, is home to several vintage stores. Here you won’t find bargains like in the thrift stores scattered around the city or in the street markets. However, it will be nice to visit the stores and walk in one of the most picturesque neighborhoods of the city. I would spend a whole day there browsing vintage shops and eating some of the best street food in Rome: gelato, rosetta, crepes, pizza al taglio

Here are the vintage shops in Monti, Rome.

  • Le Gallinelle | Via Panisperna, 59

  • Flamingo Vintage Shop | Via del Boschetto, 123

  • Pifebo Vintage Shop – Kilo Shop | Via dei Serpenti, 141
